Breaking Into Tech Sales: A Guide to Success
Many people think they aren’t qualified for tech sales or
don’t even know what it means. But here’s the good news: you don’t need prior tech or sales experience to get started. You need a growth mindset, a hunger for success, and a solid plan.
Step 1: Get Your Mindset Right
First things first, mindset is everything. Focus on developing a growth mindset. Check your ego at the door—not your confidence. Breaking into tech sales often means starting from the bottom, even if you have experience in other fields. But don’t worry. The starting base salary is typically around $55,000 (the average for re:WORK TRAINING candidates in 2021).
Step 2: Break the Rules
When you break in, you break the rules. Some people can patiently wait in line with their resumes, hoping to get in through the front door. Others believe that a certificate or degree will automatically make them in demand. For those we often serve—people from untapped communities—waiting in line isn’t an option. Our CEO, Shelton Banks, shared his story of not being able to afford to wait at the back of the line, and we assume many of you can’t either. While your resume is essential, sometimes having someone let you in through the back door is the most effective strategy.

Step 3: Slingshot Your Career
Think about how you can slingshot your career. The Business Development Representative (BDR) or Sales Development Representative (SDR) role is often entry-level but crucial in the revenue-generating organizational chart.
According to a Harvard Business Review video by Carrie Householder, less-than-perfect jobs can propel your career forward. Although the BDR and SDR roles may not be ideal, the average BDR gets promoted within a year, earning 30% more than their base salary. As you climb the corporate ladder in the Software as a Service (SaaS) model, you’ll realize that being a BDR never truly stops. Whether job hunting, introducing yourself, or making cold calls, you’re already performing the tasks of a BDR.
Long-Term Planning
Finally, the key to success is having a long-term plan. Keep your ego in check, remain focused on your goals, and follow a consistent process. Regardless of rejections or pivots, staying committed to your path is essential.
